The Ultimate Comic Book 5-Movie Collection (The Crow / The Punisher / The Spirit / Kick-Ass / Conan the Barbarian) [Blu-ray]

Great value for what you're getting!
I recently picked this up at my local Target on sale for about $16 and I could not be happier with the purchase. What I like is:

a.) All the discs are in one, slightly thin case. It's a bit thicker than most blu-rays but it is also five discs - no double-sided ones or two movies on one. I like that. Makes me think that they'll still be quality copies and not overly compressed.

b.) The discs are all their normal retail versions, including bonus features. I tested this out by putting The Crow on and watching through some of the supplementals. Usually I'm afraid that in collections like this, they'll strip down the bonus features to make up for the reduced price since they're not advertised on the back of the package.

c.) The variety is pretty good, though the movies are not necessarily what I think of when I hear "Comic Book Movies." Perhaps this was put out to cash in on some of the Iron Man 3 hype, but all of these movies are of a darker, adult nature...

Two Great Films, Three Terrible Ones
The blu-rays themselves are all great. I hadn't seen any of the movies except for The Crow, so I was excited to see the other four...for the most part I was disappointed. I'll break down the movies separately.

Conan the Barbarian, aside from a odd appearances by Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan the movie had next to nothing going for it. Jason Mamoa did a fine job as Conan, but I think he did better as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones when he could barely speak English. The action was okay, but overall the movie was forgettable. I would not watch it again. "2 Stars."

The Spirit, I saw the trailers for this movie when it came out, and was intrigued, but never went to see it. Turns out I didn't miss anything. Nothing really happened in this movie. It was incredibly slow. A great cast of actors was left standing around doing nothing. "1 Star"...only because I can't give it "Zero Stars."

The Punisher, it's pretty good up until the family reunion scene. If that...

Space saver
we already had 3 of the movies but my wife wanted one of the ones we didn't have. As there are 5 movies in this set, it allowed us to actually save 3 movie spaces. If you like a few of the movies collections are the way to go imho.

Pillow Talk [Blu-ray]

Horribly Screwed-Up DVD Transfer Of A Great Film!
Rating for this movie -- 5 Stars.
Rating for the 2004 DVD version of the film -- 1 Star.

"Pillow Talk" stars Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, and Thelma Ritter. It remains today what it was when released in October of 1959, and that is -- a highly-entertaining and well-acted romantic comedy.

The film was re-released on DVD-Video by Universal Studios on April 6th, 2004. This newer version has been enhanced for 16x9 widescreen TVs, and the anamorphic enhancement has helped in many places. However, the picture quality here does seem to be a bit of a "hit and miss" proposition. Several portions of the movie still look rather crummy (artifact-wise), exhibiting obvious dirt speckles and "noise". The opening titles sequence is peppered with dirt and artifacts galore, as are a few other parts of the film, particularly ALL of the "split screen" scenes. For some reason, it seems that these "split screen" shots could not be cleaned-up nearly as much as the...

5 Stars For The Movie- 1 Star For the DVD Version
Doris Day and Rock Hudson are perhaps the best duo in movie history. Pillow Talk is one of the most clever comedies ever made. This film is about a painful reality in the 50's- party lines. When Jan Morrow wants to use her phone, she must first listen to her other "party" Brad Allen romance the women. She finally works out a deal with him to each have a thirty minute slot where they can make calls, but selfish Brad doesn't adhere to the rules at all! Brad accidentally meets the other end of his party line at a restaurant, and makes a quick decision to become someone else. He ultimately romances Jan, while she has no idea that he is her arch enemy. For it's time, Pillow Talk was one of the more risque films, but yet one of the funniest and most romantic ever made.

On that note, I have to say I was so disappointed with this DVD. There are no extras to speak of other than the trailer and some production notes. As successful as the stars of this movie were,...

Pillow Talk
This is probably the most well known pairing of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. A laugh out loud comedy in which Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter also showcase their vast comedic talent. Jan Morrow shares a party line with Brad Allen, which she has tried to put a stop to, but the phone company won't cooperate. She uses it for her work as an interior decorator, while he uses it to seduce a multitude of women thru his song writing. When they meet by accident, he assumes another identity to get close to Jan hoping to deceive her until he has the opportunity to get what he wants. When she becomes wise to his deception, all bets are off!

Hiding in Plain Sight

An Eye Opener
This video will definitely open your eyes and really make you take notice to the people around you. There are some people who I have actually saw in a situation like this. It is really sad knowing that you're doing all that you can and you're forced into a situation like this. It is a must see movie for the entire family to watch together.

Face/Off [Blu-ray Steelbook]

Face Off on Blu Ray
Not giving a book report summary of the plot or acting critiques here. Just focusing on the Blu Ray transfer itself. Should you check on any of my reviews, and I hope that you do, that is what you will get, only a discussion of the quality of the transfer.

The video transfer onto Blu Ray, as opposed to the standard def version of Face Off, offers an improvement in both resolution and shadow depth....it is not the best video transfer I have ever seen and there are some scenes that appear soft and perhaps muted via the compression, but never the less, the video transfer to Blu Ray is good. There aren't any hints of video banding, aliasing or artifacts. Some snow or grain can be seen if you look for it but it is not very apparent or in any way distracting.

The audio is the star of this transfer, tho the audio on the Standard Def version was also good. You are offered DTS 5.1 or 5.1 EX. I preferred the DTS audio and, tho it is lossy, the disc is still demo...

Special Features include NO new interviews with Cage or Travolta.....
We already know this is a great action film with superb performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will just comment on the features:

Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, set designs, special effects, weapons and the 'mimic' acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the original theatrical trailer.

The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in newly filmed interviews, both Travolta and Cage participate only by way of vintage interviews filmed back when the movie was actually being made. You would think they would have been proud enough of this great film to come back to document it for posterity sake...

This DVD is probably worth the upgrade for fans, especially if you can manage to get a few bucks for...

A masterpiece
Face/Off is a spectacular film. It is a definite classic in terms of modern action films. Face/Off, like many action films, has enough explosive action scenes to leave you on the edge of your seat. However, unlike most action films, Face/Off's brilliance is found in its story, its direction, and its acting, not in its action sequences. With superb acting by two very talented actors, Nicholas Cage and John Travolta, the viewer is caught up in the story rather than the action, it almost deserves the category of "action drama." Although, being a John Woo movie, the action sequences are nothing short of spectacular. Face/Off, a combination of great acting, a great story, and well-choreographed action, is a must see for any action lover.

The Jazz Singer [HD]

Classic Movie
I watched this again after remembering it from about 20 years back. It is a classic film which is inspiring and great for the whole family.

Wonderful Experience
Neil Diamond is one of my all time favorite singers. I think it was a great gift for him to put himself out there to do this movie. However, this movie is enjoyable in its own right. It has a sweet but fairly realistic love story. It portrays a young man struggling to define himself between the expectations of his culture and who he yearns and feels driven to be. Then there is the soundtrack! Mr Diamond has some of his best work presented here. I don't remember how many of them made the top of the charts, but several did. I also gave up counting how many times I saw this movie while it was still in the theaters. It's a great pleasure to add it to my personal library.

Neil Diamond
I love Neil Diamond. I love his singing and his acting. Will watch this over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are a Neil Diamond fan you will love the Jazz Singer.

Heaven [Blu-ray]

How high can you fly?
What is true love? What would we do to keep it, once we find it? Is this what it is like to find a true soulmate? What is wrong and right if we seek redemption, but are dragged down by a lust for justice?

Few filmmakers could address such questions with any kind of depth without relying on schmaltz, but one such was the late Krzysztof Kieslowski, who brought us such beautiful films as the Trois Couleurs Trilogy. But when he died after beginning a new cycle of films, Tom Tykwer stepped in to finish Kieslowski's final work -- and the exquisite result is a light-filled hybrid of both their styles.

In Italy, young schoolteacher Phillipa Paccard (Cate Blanchett) sneaks into drug kingpin Vendice's office and plants a bomb in his trash, not knowing that the trash is about to be collected. The resulting explosion kills the cleaning lady, a man and his two children. When Phillipa is arrested and told this, she is aghast. She only intended to kill the kingpin, because his...

Mono? Are you kidding me? MONO?
This review is for the Blu-Ray of "Heaven", not the movie itself, which is a personal favorite. The picture is crisp, but washed out. OK, this is a cheap disc. I get that, but such a visual movie should receive better treatment. The really insulting fact is that the soundtrack is NOT stereo as indicated in the description and on the case. It is Mono. I know this is not an action movie, but it has some directional sounds and, more importantly, a wonderful soundtrack, which is reproduced in remarkably flat (and I mean DRAB, FLAT), lifeless mono. The streaming version available from you-know-who has a better image and surround sound.

A major REJECT from this fan.
