The Ultimate Comic Book 5-Movie Collection (The Crow / The Punisher / The Spirit / Kick-Ass / Conan the Barbarian) [Blu-ray]

Great value for what you're getting!
I recently picked this up at my local Target on sale for about $16 and I could not be happier with the purchase. What I like is:

a.) All the discs are in one, slightly thin case. It's a bit thicker than most blu-rays but it is also five discs - no double-sided ones or two movies on one. I like that. Makes me think that they'll still be quality copies and not overly compressed.

b.) The discs are all their normal retail versions, including bonus features. I tested this out by putting The Crow on and watching through some of the supplementals. Usually I'm afraid that in collections like this, they'll strip down the bonus features to make up for the reduced price since they're not advertised on the back of the package.

c.) The variety is pretty good, though the movies are not necessarily what I think of when I hear "Comic Book Movies." Perhaps this was put out to cash in on some of the Iron Man 3 hype, but all of these movies are of a darker, adult nature...

Two Great Films, Three Terrible Ones
The blu-rays themselves are all great. I hadn't seen any of the movies except for The Crow, so I was excited to see the other four...for the most part I was disappointed. I'll break down the movies separately.

Conan the Barbarian, aside from a odd appearances by Ron Perlman and Rose McGowan the movie had next to nothing going for it. Jason Mamoa did a fine job as Conan, but I think he did better as Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones when he could barely speak English. The action was okay, but overall the movie was forgettable. I would not watch it again. "2 Stars."

The Spirit, I saw the trailers for this movie when it came out, and was intrigued, but never went to see it. Turns out I didn't miss anything. Nothing really happened in this movie. It was incredibly slow. A great cast of actors was left standing around doing nothing. "1 Star"...only because I can't give it "Zero Stars."

The Punisher, it's pretty good up until the family reunion scene. If that...

Space saver
we already had 3 of the movies but my wife wanted one of the ones we didn't have. As there are 5 movies in this set, it allowed us to actually save 3 movie spaces. If you like a few of the movies collections are the way to go imho.

Pillow Talk [Blu-ray]

Horribly Screwed-Up DVD Transfer Of A Great Film!
Rating for this movie -- 5 Stars.
Rating for the 2004 DVD version of the film -- 1 Star.

"Pillow Talk" stars Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Tony Randall, and Thelma Ritter. It remains today what it was when released in October of 1959, and that is -- a highly-entertaining and well-acted romantic comedy.

The film was re-released on DVD-Video by Universal Studios on April 6th, 2004. This newer version has been enhanced for 16x9 widescreen TVs, and the anamorphic enhancement has helped in many places. However, the picture quality here does seem to be a bit of a "hit and miss" proposition. Several portions of the movie still look rather crummy (artifact-wise), exhibiting obvious dirt speckles and "noise". The opening titles sequence is peppered with dirt and artifacts galore, as are a few other parts of the film, particularly ALL of the "split screen" scenes. For some reason, it seems that these "split screen" shots could not be cleaned-up nearly as much as the...

5 Stars For The Movie- 1 Star For the DVD Version
Doris Day and Rock Hudson are perhaps the best duo in movie history. Pillow Talk is one of the most clever comedies ever made. This film is about a painful reality in the 50's- party lines. When Jan Morrow wants to use her phone, she must first listen to her other "party" Brad Allen romance the women. She finally works out a deal with him to each have a thirty minute slot where they can make calls, but selfish Brad doesn't adhere to the rules at all! Brad accidentally meets the other end of his party line at a restaurant, and makes a quick decision to become someone else. He ultimately romances Jan, while she has no idea that he is her arch enemy. For it's time, Pillow Talk was one of the more risque films, but yet one of the funniest and most romantic ever made.

On that note, I have to say I was so disappointed with this DVD. There are no extras to speak of other than the trailer and some production notes. As successful as the stars of this movie were,...

Pillow Talk
This is probably the most well known pairing of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. A laugh out loud comedy in which Tony Randall and Thelma Ritter also showcase their vast comedic talent. Jan Morrow shares a party line with Brad Allen, which she has tried to put a stop to, but the phone company won't cooperate. She uses it for her work as an interior decorator, while he uses it to seduce a multitude of women thru his song writing. When they meet by accident, he assumes another identity to get close to Jan hoping to deceive her until he has the opportunity to get what he wants. When she becomes wise to his deception, all bets are off!

Hiding in Plain Sight

An Eye Opener
This video will definitely open your eyes and really make you take notice to the people around you. There are some people who I have actually saw in a situation like this. It is really sad knowing that you're doing all that you can and you're forced into a situation like this. It is a must see movie for the entire family to watch together.

Face/Off [Blu-ray Steelbook]

Face Off on Blu Ray
Not giving a book report summary of the plot or acting critiques here. Just focusing on the Blu Ray transfer itself. Should you check on any of my reviews, and I hope that you do, that is what you will get, only a discussion of the quality of the transfer.

The video transfer onto Blu Ray, as opposed to the standard def version of Face Off, offers an improvement in both resolution and shadow depth....it is not the best video transfer I have ever seen and there are some scenes that appear soft and perhaps muted via the compression, but never the less, the video transfer to Blu Ray is good. There aren't any hints of video banding, aliasing or artifacts. Some snow or grain can be seen if you look for it but it is not very apparent or in any way distracting.

The audio is the star of this transfer, tho the audio on the Standard Def version was also good. You are offered DTS 5.1 or 5.1 EX. I preferred the DTS audio and, tho it is lossy, the disc is still demo...

Special Features include NO new interviews with Cage or Travolta.....
We already know this is a great action film with superb performances from both Travolta and Cage so I will just comment on the features:

Featurettes includes a decent amount information on all aspects of the script development, making of, locations, casting, set designs, special effects, weapons and the 'mimic' acting strategies for Cage/Travlota playing each other. Also includes 7 deleted scenes, a biography-type feature covering the life and career of director John Woo, and the original theatrical trailer.

The greatest disappointment here is that while several cast/crew members appear in newly filmed interviews, both Travolta and Cage participate only by way of vintage interviews filmed back when the movie was actually being made. You would think they would have been proud enough of this great film to come back to document it for posterity sake...

This DVD is probably worth the upgrade for fans, especially if you can manage to get a few bucks for...

A masterpiece
Face/Off is a spectacular film. It is a definite classic in terms of modern action films. Face/Off, like many action films, has enough explosive action scenes to leave you on the edge of your seat. However, unlike most action films, Face/Off's brilliance is found in its story, its direction, and its acting, not in its action sequences. With superb acting by two very talented actors, Nicholas Cage and John Travolta, the viewer is caught up in the story rather than the action, it almost deserves the category of "action drama." Although, being a John Woo movie, the action sequences are nothing short of spectacular. Face/Off, a combination of great acting, a great story, and well-choreographed action, is a must see for any action lover.

The Jazz Singer [HD]

Classic Movie
I watched this again after remembering it from about 20 years back. It is a classic film which is inspiring and great for the whole family.

Wonderful Experience
Neil Diamond is one of my all time favorite singers. I think it was a great gift for him to put himself out there to do this movie. However, this movie is enjoyable in its own right. It has a sweet but fairly realistic love story. It portrays a young man struggling to define himself between the expectations of his culture and who he yearns and feels driven to be. Then there is the soundtrack! Mr Diamond has some of his best work presented here. I don't remember how many of them made the top of the charts, but several did. I also gave up counting how many times I saw this movie while it was still in the theaters. It's a great pleasure to add it to my personal library.

Neil Diamond
I love Neil Diamond. I love his singing and his acting. Will watch this over and over again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you are a Neil Diamond fan you will love the Jazz Singer.

Heaven [Blu-ray]

How high can you fly?
What is true love? What would we do to keep it, once we find it? Is this what it is like to find a true soulmate? What is wrong and right if we seek redemption, but are dragged down by a lust for justice?

Few filmmakers could address such questions with any kind of depth without relying on schmaltz, but one such was the late Krzysztof Kieslowski, who brought us such beautiful films as the Trois Couleurs Trilogy. But when he died after beginning a new cycle of films, Tom Tykwer stepped in to finish Kieslowski's final work -- and the exquisite result is a light-filled hybrid of both their styles.

In Italy, young schoolteacher Phillipa Paccard (Cate Blanchett) sneaks into drug kingpin Vendice's office and plants a bomb in his trash, not knowing that the trash is about to be collected. The resulting explosion kills the cleaning lady, a man and his two children. When Phillipa is arrested and told this, she is aghast. She only intended to kill the kingpin, because his...

Mono? Are you kidding me? MONO?
This review is for the Blu-Ray of "Heaven", not the movie itself, which is a personal favorite. The picture is crisp, but washed out. OK, this is a cheap disc. I get that, but such a visual movie should receive better treatment. The really insulting fact is that the soundtrack is NOT stereo as indicated in the description and on the case. It is Mono. I know this is not an action movie, but it has some directional sounds and, more importantly, a wonderful soundtrack, which is reproduced in remarkably flat (and I mean DRAB, FLAT), lifeless mono. The streaming version available from you-know-who has a better image and surround sound.

A major REJECT from this fan.

A Portrait of James Dean: Joshua Tree, 1951

A SLOW MOVING BUT BRILLIANT FILM.
There is little to fault with this film.It is beautifully photographed mostly in black and white and the acting and directing are exceptionally good.It won't be to everyone's taste as it is indeed slowly paced. It offers a different perspective of James Dean compared with what we have seen before in other films on Dean. Stay with it and you will be rewarded. A must see. Only one extra-a short film about the childhood of Derek Jarman.

for those who who are willing to search a bit
The reviews on this film seem mixed but I tried it and I found it to be haunting and engaging. This is not a linear narrative but a collage of moments and thoughts that form a picture. You have to be willing to wait and listen and search for the meanings. The cinematography is superb. Dean is less an enigma but a person who made his own way, who constantly searched for an anchor. He was not a na

Nova Rex: Ain't Easy Being Cheesy

A lighthearted look at the rise and fall of glam- and of course, the band!
Many of us have experienced the big sounds of late 80's glam and its transition into the various musical revolutions of the 90s. Glam band, Nova Rex, takes us through a hilarious account of what it was like to be a part of the action during this time period. Groupies, former rockers, and fans will experience a lighthearted nostalgia through the band's personal accounts, video footage, and snippets from photo albums and live shows. It is a time period many will remember and enjoy reliving through this hilarious documentary.

I found the interviews very interesting and it was all entertaining, light, and fun. It really captured the essence of music at that time and the prevailing rock band culture. What happened to the band when the shift in popular musical genre occurred? The documentary spares few details as they recount party nights, hyped up shows at big venues, and the inevitable crash of the band. It is so awesome that they are able to take away the good from it and...

It kind of fun
I like it and its fun to see an update on an old classic and I was pleased to see that they kept so many important elements from the original.

Kid Favorite!!!
My kids love it!! They are always asking when can they watch another Speed Racer!!!! I would recommend it to anyone with boys who like cars!

Good Continuation
Hate the new theme song variation, but the new generation Speed Racer does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the old one without the violence that I loved so much in the original.

Safe Haven

Chick Flick??? with an Element of Suspense
I'm not so sure you should classify this as a chick flick, even though there seemed to be a lot more females than males at the screening I attended. For me there were enough non-romance scenes to make it a more of a mystery. I can't say a lot about the plot without spoiling it for those who haven't seen it.

The movie runs the course of your basic romance with an unlikely couple who meet and fall for each other in spite of their problems until their relationship takes a major hit due to revelations about a secret past. In fact, threaded throughout the story are short scenes involving a Boston cop obsessed with finding a suspect in an attempted murder. There are a few tense moments of violence and absolute terror, but it's not gratuitous or over done, only enough to reveal the mystery and lead to a satisfying conclusion, (or not). What I liked the most was that, just when I thought the plot had taken its final twist, a letter is opened and read which surprised me all over...

This was one of the best movies I have ever seen.
One day my mom said she wanted to see this. So we went and saw it. It starts out with some mystery. A girl seems to be hiding. From what or whom you are unsure. Then, she finds a place to feel safe and starts to enjoy her new dwellings. Throughout the movie you will learn about what she is afraid of and what happened to finally free her and make her run. Then, there may just be something in the movie that will happen that makes you have this weird feeling in your gut. I will not say anything though.

The chemistry between the actor that plays the father and the actress that plays the girl is amazing. They are so good at playing nervous, anxious people who are falling for one another. You will come to like both of them and hope for good things to happen. There is someone else in the movie as well. A detective/cop. His role in the movie is important.

The kids that play the mans kids are great. They are such good actors. I am proud of them. They never...

Slow at times but ending makes up for it
Safe Haven is a movie about a young woman who is running from her past and lands in Southport, North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that haunts her.

I know this is based on a novel but I am not familiar with that so I cant say how well it was translated from the book to the movie. I do know that the author played a role as a producer so that should help with following the book.

Thinking this was your typical chick type flick, I wasn't too excited about watching this movie but I decided to give it a chance after hearing good things and see what it was about. The movie at times was a little slow moving but had some beautiful scenic shots of North Carolina. The little girl that played the daughter also was a bright spot as she seemed to bring some cuteness to the movie as well. I felt the "bad guy" (Played by David Lyons) in the movie could have been acted a bit better though and to me was the weak point. I just...

Have Gun Will Travel: The Sixth and Final Season, Vol. 1

At Least It Completes Your Set......
While I am glad to see Have Gun-Will Travel FINALLY completed on professional DVD release; I have to point out the crowning injustice of this set......

Of course, the '2-volume-split' format is a blatant profit-gouge...

BUT, to make matters all the worse; HGWT SEASON SIX IS THE SERIES` SHORTEST (by 6 episodes) SEASON !

I could also point out that behind-the-scenes, Richard Boone had already decided to end the series before season 6 began filming, and thus the episode count was cut to the minimum and the scripts for the latter part of the season were previously-rejected (or to be kind; put on the 'back-burner') stories which were finally used to avoid paying for still more material (as these had already been paid for)....
Thus you get such weak tales as 'Lady Of The Fifth Moon', 'Two Plus One' etc....

Oh, there are highlights; the dramatics of 'The Fifth Bullet' (with Ben Johnson in great character), 'A Place For Abel Hix' (Paladin out...

Review of the first episode "genesis"
The first episode of the season is an extremely interesting and unusual bit of television. It simultaniously provides both the beginning and the possible ending of the title character. Richard Boone plays two parts which are essentially his younger and older self confronting each other. Its well written and quite original.

The Paladin character is a former west point officer and civil war veteran. He is from an important family but falls into disgrace and is eventually paid by his family not to go home. To stay away. He falls into a life of dueling, gambling and mercenary work. The episode shows the character hitting rock bottom in his youth, confronting his mistakes years later and possibly reaching a sort of redemption late in life. Whats so good about
the episode is that explains the character in an allegorical way rather than a literal one. The answers it offers are meaningful answers rather than trivia.

William Conrad both directs and plays a role in...

Paladin Goes Out With a Bang: The Final Season Vol. 1
I highly recommend volume one of season six (the final season) of Have Gun Will Travel (HGWT. What makes this season set so desirable that among it's great video library of stories are five top notch episodes:

Genesis
Memories of Monica
The Predators
Marshal of Sweetwater
A Place For Abel Hix

I would like to comment on a one of these episodes.

"Genesis" tells us the story of the origin of Paladin. The story begins with an intruder that breaks into Paladin's apartment to commit theft or to kill Paladin (it's been a long time since I've seen the episode) to pay off a huge gambling debt. Paladin stops the burglar and asks the burglar why he tried to steal from/kill him. He explains to Paladin that he has accrued a huge gambling debt...which reminds Paladin of a time long ago when he owed a huge gambling debt to Norge (played by William Conrad). Thus begins the meat of the episode...the flashback starts BEFORE Richard Boone's...

The Great Escape [Blu-ray]

Where Was This Film On The AFI List?
The Great Escape certainly didn't get its due when it was released -- it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, Director or any of the Acting awards. In fact, it was only nominated for Film Editing! It seems, however, that the film doesn't even get its proper due today as it was not on the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Film list despite its large following.

The Great Escape is certainly one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. The cast includes the late great Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough (Director of Gandhi), Charles Bronson, James Coburn, James Donald (Bridge on the River Kwai), Donald Pleasance and David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). McQueen's performance is riveting and makes the viewer miss him all the more. Garner, who actually was a "Scrounger" during the Korean War, is terrific. It's also particularly nice to see a performance as a good guy from Pleasance and as a human being by Bronson (sorry, but Bronson truly...

Rip Roaring Entertainment That Holds The Test Of Time
I saw The Great Escape in the fall of 1963 when I was 8 years old. In my hometown during those days moviegoing was a family affair-- wear nice slacks and shirt etc. Seeing this grand movie with the macho stars on a big screen with booming sound made quite an impression on me. Steve McQueen was simply the "King Of Cool" and he became my favorite film star.

This movie has transcended generations -- my 18 year old son recently viewed it and he was totally engrossed in this fantastic true story of men seeking freedom under the most desperate circumstances. He agreed with me that "they don't make em like they used to" and that most of the films today can't hold a candle to The Great Escape.

The DVD is superb -- the color and picture quality is first rate -- looks just like when I saw it in the fall of 1963 at the old Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY. The featurette on the making of The Great Escape is a nice feature that I never saw before.

TGE BluRay - The Good, The Bad and The Questionable
I received my Blu Ray copy of this classic film today, May 6, one day before the actual release day of May 7. Thank you, amazon!

I'd also mention that I pre-ordered this BD with Amazon's price guarantee. I noticed that the BD was put on sale yesterday morning at amazon for only $9.99, which was less than the $14.99 I had paid on pre-order. I assumed I would get the lower price, but when my BD shipped last night, it was at the higher price. I dashed off an e-mail to amazon's customer service last night, and by this morning, I had a response AND a credit of $6.71 toward my Visa card to give me the lower price of $9.99! Thank you AGAIN, amazon! Now, THAT'S customer service!

Props to amazon duly noted, on to the review:

I've now watched the BD of the film twice, and I find myself largely in agreement with the review that is up at Bluray.com. The soundtrack sounds very good, especially for a 50-year-old film. The music comes through powerfully, especially...

Bobs Burgers Season 2

bootleg quality...retail price
This review is for the DVD-R version of Bob's Burgers Season 2, not the show itself. The show is great! Fox decided to release season 2 on the cheap: the jewel case is low quality, the disks are ultra low quality (they also come with scratches all over them, free of charge), cheap stickers on the front of the disks instead of what you would expect from an official release, almost no special features. I can't believe Fox has the stones to charge $23 for 9 episodes and not even produce a quality DVD set. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!!! If this is type of garbage product that Fox is going to release for it's TV shows, they will not get another dime of my money. I'd rather keep the shows on my DVR and fast forward through commercials before I buy another DVD-R product. I urge everyone that feels the same about the DVD-R sets to write reviews about them and show the tools that run Fox home entertainment what happens when they try to cheat and steal from the people that give them money.

Unacceptable
I already submitted a review to this but apparently it must've been deleted. Well, I want people to know about this so here is my second attempt to submit this and unfortunately isn't as detailed as my first... Bob's Burgers season 2 is a fine season of a fine show. Not the best show out there but a pretty good one and I know a terrible money-grub when I see it, so please don't assume I hate the show, because I don't. Not only are there four less episodes in this DVD set than the last one, but there are no commentaries (the first one had multiple commentaries on every episode), teases you into thinking there are season 3 episodes by referencing them in the cover art (not to mention the only special feature is a table read for one act of a season 3 episode that isn't even on the DVD) and perhaps worst of all, it's a cheap DVD-R like The Cleveland Show season 3. Thirty dollars for this? Hell no. If you MUST watch these, stream them on Netflix. Avoid at all costs, contact Fox and Amazon...

Not even closed captioned!!
My husband and I had been eager to get season two on DVD as we have watched season one so many times I was worried we'd wear it out before two became available! While I understand everyone's disappointment with the low episode count and lack of special features, I like the show so much I had no problem paying for it despite the reviews. However, had I known there were no sub-titles or closed caption, I would have saved my money!! My husband is extremely hard of hearing, and totally dependent upon the closed caption. We were so disappointed that even this 'special feature' was lacking!! In this day and age, it is EXPECTED to be there, unless you are buying a public-domain super-discounted poor quality DVD. I wish the 'closed caption status' of EVERY product would be disclosed as part of the product description. I have not often been burned by the fact that if the description doesn't SAY it is CC then you have to assume it is NOT, but on a 'new' product like this I didn't even...

The Sleepover/Cold Winter's Day [HD]

The best show ever on TV
This is the hands down best show for young kids on TV. The characters speak in short, but grammatically correct sentences. The narrator explains what's going on. The characters don't act like idiots and are relatively well behaved and the plotlines are simple, but reasonable. My kid is 2.5 years right now and has liked this show since she was 18 months old.

Age of Dinosaurs [Blu-ray]

Pass The Crackers: This SyFy Cheese-Fest Provides Plenty Of Loopy Silliness
3 1/2 Stars: On The Bad Movie SyFy Scale
1 1/2 Stars: If You're Looking For A Real Movie

No one can say that the film production company called The Asylum aren't consistent. The premiere brand in spectacularly bad entertainment, The Asylum works in conjunction with the SyFy Channel to fill its slate of original movie productions. From a technical standpoint, these movies don't boast high production values or A-list actors. Instead, they aspire to a silliness that can either be refreshingly entertaining or just plain excruciating. The movies are bad, to be sure, but some can rise to the level of Bad Movie Magic. For my money, "Age of Dinosaurs" is so terrifically awful that it kept me fitfully amused throughout its brief running time. In my estimation, the moderate success of this treat is a fully committed cast, a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and a escalating sense of over-the-top mayhem. If you're a fan of bad movie cheese, this is a nice appetizer. If, however,...

A real fun movie, loved the dinosaurs and the attempt to act serious.
Dinosaurs run amok in this movie, a sort of combined Jurassic Park and one million BC. Watch for fun, this is great.

LARRY THE LOUNGE LIZARD
There is nothing like an Asylum film where there is a disaster and a family is trying to save itself. In this formulaic disaster, Gabe, the fireman (Treat Williams) takes his estranged daughter (Jillian Rose Reed) to an impromptu dinosaur petting zoo. It seems those wonderful folks at Geneti-Sharp have created their own Jurassic Park in their office building. Things go oops. We witness scenes already done in "Jurassic Park" as people play hide and seek with a meat eater.

The film is complete with blood splatter and an exploding CG helicopter. May work as a film for the 9-tween. Adults can pass on this one.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex, or nudity.

Thrill Hunter (1933)

"That's Buck Crosby, the daredevil. He's doing the lead in my picture."
Here's a sad thing: As the years go on and on, the lesser lights of old Hollywood only get more marginalized or just plain forgotten. I had never heard of Buck Jones - hadn't known he was a popular B-western star - until I read about the infamous fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in 1942. When TCM aired THRILL HUNTER, I tuned in, nursing a mild curiosity about the leading man who was a casualty in the Cocoanut Grove.

It's an atypical oater, and Charles "Buck" Jones plays an atypical cowboy role. This film came out in 1933, a period in which western heroes were always depicted as purehearted and honest. Buck Crosby happens to be brave and he shoots straight and is a natural horseman. He's also a pathological liar. The film opens with Buck's saving a motion picture actress from her runaway horse. Marjorie Lane (Dorothy Revier), the grateful starlet, invites him to dine with her and her film crew and later invites him to come to Hollywood and shoot a film with her...

This is an interesting DVD in that it is American Justice programs that aired on A & E. The Manson segment, as well as the Ramirez segment, were the more riveting of the programs contained. If you like crime documentaries, this is a nice set of 6 programs that cover the Alcatraz Prison Rebellion, Charles Manson, SLA-Kidnapping of Patty Hearst, Reverend Jim Jones, City Hall Killings (Dan White) and the Night Stalker.

Ong bak 2

Superior To the Original
As much as I enjoyed the original "Ong Bak" (2003), there were moments that felt like it was attempting to mimic big-budget action movies from other parts of the world (e.g., the motorbike chase, which was kinda lame). The script was also a bit bland in places. Still a great action flick, but it left some room for improvement.

Enter "Ong Bak 2", which improves upon its predecessor in every conceivable way. The most obvious enhancements are the cinematography and set designs, which are phenomenal. The highlight sequence in this regard must be the night time dance, which emphasizes golden architecture and beautiful clothing that reminds one of the striking visuals that are showcased in Zhang Yimou's films. All is not so clean, however, because the environments add a significant amount of authenticity with an unending assault of gritty, dirty, primal village imagery amidst the forests of Thailand. One simply cannot overstate the spectacular images presented herein, and many...

Really good for a lazy day!
The movie is good. The action is great.

The action is different than Ong Bak in that they have more film cuts and use many martial arts, but the action is absolutely visually stunning and as usual, Tony Jaa clearly put life and limb on the line for his art.

If you have 10 bucks and have nothing to do, it is a nice treat!

Hopefully the shape of martial arts films to come...
I just picked this movie at random after watching Iriminage on YouTube for an hour and was really happy that I did. Everything about the movie showed a sense of respect for the subject as well as the audience. The story was not overly complicated, so it was easy to understand and follow, but at the same time it was interesting and compelling enough to make me want to keep watching. Considering this is a martial arts film, the acting blew me away. The actors really seemed comfortable with their roles and were natural, making it easy to get into the story. The cinematography was really good and made for an eye catching experience. On top of all of that, the martial arts were truly awesome. Maybe wires were being used in some places, but it wasn't at all obvious if they were, and most of the stunts looked real (no "slap the guy and two seconds later his head jerks sideways" stuff) and some of them even looked painful. I wish they would put up the outtakes on YouTube or somewhere.

Jack Reacher

Not what I expected...Cruise nails it.
Wolverine, the most popular of the X-Men and one of the most popular comic book characters in comic book history is also one of the shortest. According to thirty plus years of continuous publication, Logan - AKA wolverine - is 5'2" tall and somewhere around 200 lbs, with metal infused skeleton and claws, and a back as hairy as a Kodiak bear. When X-Men director Bryan Singer cast a slim 6'3" song-and-dance man named Hugh Jackman to play the short stocky Wolverine, comic book geeks everywhere said "What the f***?"

Now anyone familiar with the Jack Reacher novels written by Lee Child knows that main character of the novels is a 6'5" 250 pound blond haired blue eye bruiser with the face of a professional rugby player. And likewise anyone who read the novels must have said "What the f***?" upon learning that the diminutive Tom Cruise was cast to play Jack Reacher. "He's too small. He's too Pretty." My wife, who's a huge fan of Lee Child's novels, was so irritated with the...

Smart, fun, well-paced detective/actioner, but leave expectations at the door.
The main complaint I heard and read before JACK REACHER ever even hit theatres was from fans of Lee Child's series of books about this film's titular character, and it was always the same complaint: "Tom Cruise is too short! Jack Reacher is 6'5" and is built like a brick outhouse!!" And my response to that was always: "Can you think of an actor who's really good, does action well, has a lot of charisma, and IS ACTUALLY built like that?"

Christopher McQuarrie, the Oscar-Winning screenwriter of Bryan Singer's unforgettable THE USUAL SUSPECTS, and the writer/director of the very forgettable THE WAY OF THE GUN, picked up his pen and got back behind the camera for this potential franchise first outing for the cinematic adventures of Jack Reacher (Cruise), former Army military police investigator. He's, as they say in the film, a ghost. He has no fixed address, no credit cards, no phone number. In fact, the only proof of his existence is a bank account, his military record, and...

Surprisingly good action film...
I'm the first to admit that going into this film I had low expectations. Cruise is a decent enough actor and well suited for the genre, but the plot seemed derivative and overly pedantic, just another flick I'd catch because...well...I'm a dude and the preview mentioned something about guns and explosives.

Surprisingly, the plot played out steadily, not needing to be propped up by a few well placed action sequences. While, if you've seen any movie ever in your life, you'll be able to predict what's going to ultimately happen, "Reacher" maintains a consistent level of intrigue and charm through the whole length of the film. I appreciated that the action scenes actually added to the plot. I was expecting some random "Look how awesome I am at fighting" scenes tossed into the mix, and was happy to see that while those scenes are absolutely in there, they also help move the plot forward. Good thinking, action-movie-maker-people (pretty sure that's the correct technical job...

From the National Geographic Archives: Egypt - Secrets of Pharaohs & The Quest for Noah's Flood (Double Feature)

Signature Documentaries From The Geographic
A pair of Geographic documentaries, both concentrating on the ancient world. The Noah's Ark documentary follows Robert Ballard on the Black Sea, looking at evidence of a massive flood that may have inspired the folk tales that eventually led to a biblical tale. The Egyptian documentary studies various aspects of ancient Egypt, including archaeological discoveries and the process of making a mummy in the present day. Both documentaries are insightful, particularly for those with an appreciation of the ancient world.

Fangoria Presents Sin Reaper [HD]

I watched the film to see Lance...
Needless to say, Lance Henriksen was the reason I watched the film. His scenes were very good...as always. I also appreciate the fact that he brought his talent and reputation to a group of filmmakers who are in the early stages. It's not the first--or last--horror film with a thin narrative that I will watch. My only other thought: Sometimes "twists" aren't necessary.

Adam 12 - Classic Collection - Embossed Slim Tin

Adam-12 returns to DVD for another great season
I got hooked on Adam-12 when Tv Land aired it a few years ago. It's one of the best done cop shows that has ever aired on television. It has a serious, straight forward look at life on the streets, but there is plenty of humor to give it a perfect balance. Dranget and Emergency also blended well. Jack Webb was in charge of all of the shows mentioned above. I can only hope that Shout Factory will release the rest of Adam-12 and then release the final three years of Dragnet. I am shocked that Dragnet did not sell well enough to continue releasing it. Anyway, buy the third season of Adam-12, you won't regret it.

Not their best - but we still love it!
Not sure if the director changed? Writers changed? Jack Webb got too involved in this season??? But, the acting by main characters (especially Malloy) and the extras changed a lot and not for the better. The acting is stiff in many episodes - the terminology used is beyond hokey at times - such as Beji yelling out Dadio (episode 3 The Purse snachter) - this is the late 60s Mr. Webb!!! It is obvious that the "bad acting" has to be the writers/directors/Jack Webb as many of the extras have appeared in other episodes, other seasons and were much better!
But there are a few episodes that are really good! My favorite is when Malloy realizes in roll call that his license has expired and Reed finally gets to drive! This is an excellent episode and by itself brings the 3 stars up to a 4. Adam 12 is one of our FAVORITE series! Where is season 6&7??? I've watched them on Netflix, they have to be out there???
Here is a breakdown of episodes available on season 3:...

Great Job on Season 3 of Adam 12!
I just spent the last 2 days doing my own version of a mini marathon watching Adam 12 - Season 3. Shout Factory came through with another fine product. There were no difficulties with watching the DVDs. The picture was crisp and clean, colors were not faded and worn out. The audio was also nicely done! Great job! I look forward to buying Season 4 whenever it becomes available.

This is my favorite series (other than Star Trek).

RuPaul's Drag Race: Reunited [HD]

This show has it all!
Let me first say that I don't usually like reality shows. All they do is tear people down for entertainment. This show is not like that. Even though it is a reality show there is such a postive message "If you can't love yourself how the hell are you going to love somebody else?" Even when someone is eliminated Ru has kind words to say to each one before they sashay away. Not only is RuPaul's Drag Race funny but there are a lot of touching moments where the queens share their back stories. Once you get to know the queens it makes it personal and you really start to route for them. Some of them make real progress through out the season (Jinkx) and you route for them even more. Drag really is an art form. From the makeup to the costumes to the performance it is exciting and entertaining. Of course there are also the cat fights. I have to say this is the bitchiest season ever. I thought Sharron Needles and Phi Phi O'Hara were bad last year but they had nothing on the fights this year...

The show itself is 5-stars, getting it through Amazon is 3, here's why
I am addicted to this show, but don't have cable or the time to go out every Monday night for the weekly shows at the gay bar (Tuesday morning class is inevitably missed if I do). For past seasons I'd just watch the day after for free on Logo, but because it's streaming and the quality tends to fluctuate, there is constant buffering, etc. So I thought buying it through Amazon would afford me better quality which it only kind of does. It takes a while for it to "warm up" and actually show in HD, and if I pause or stop viewing it takes forever to start again. Now, I wouldn't mind that so much if two things were true: if the price were lower (especially as an Amazon prime member, I feel like shows that are already online for free elsewhere shouldn't cost so much per season) and if the Untucked episodes followed as they do on LogoTV's website. If Amazon Prime Instant video wants to compete with Netflix (and other TV providers, but who even uses those anymore?), they have to actually offer...

Fab Fashion, Talent, & Back-Stabbing Bi^%hes That Make You Feel Sweet!
I LOVE wonderful fashion, and that is perhaps my greatest draw to this show. These Queens are fantastic performers, and they are really ran ragged! I knew who RuPaul was before, but never had seen him/her perform! Great sense of humor, and as is true of any great comedic feat, RuPaul actually brings genuine love to task, too. Inspiring to watch a show that is decidedly gay and not holding back! Not for kiddos, there is a lot of sexual innuendo. My favorite winner thus far has been Sharon Needles--I literally cried when she won! Thanks RuPaul for giving us the most awesome drag performances in the comfort of out very own homes!!! Love You!!!

Mark 2: Redemption

More LaHayeian apocalypse
"The Mark 2: Redemption" will be familiar to anyone who's seen other Christian end times movies like "Left Behind", "Apocalypse" or "Moment After". The rapture has just taken place and we get to follow those left behind as the world unites under a charismatic new leader (Antichrist). The bad guys still want the microchip that's implanted in Craig Sheffer's arm. "The Mark: Redemption" is less preachy compared to some other films in this genre and can be enjoyed by non-Christian fans of apocalyptic action movies if they can overlook the occasional religious references. But be prepared for another open ending that lets a lot of loose ends untied to make room for one or more sequels.

The mark 2
I was anxiously awaiting this sequel and was not disappointed. Not a lot of faith based action movies out there so needless to say the men in my family enjoyed it as well.

the end times
Second movie in the series. Neat movie about "marking" everyone with an enbeded chip to track them. Best if you've seen "the Mark" first.

Common Law (2012)

Deserved Better Treatment
I'm happy that this DVD collection is finally listed on Amazon. Surely that means it'll eventually be available, although no date is currently listed. It's a shame this show wasn't given a fair chance on USA. I saw lots of ads for it before it aired. Once the first episode hit the air, I never saw another commercial for this show ever again. I don't understand why. It had great chemistry between the two leads and they were playing fascinating characters - which was the best part about the show. These two characters were complex and messed up and so interesting to watch. Had the show aired another season, I was looking forward to learning more about both of them, Wes in particular, and what exactly had happened to him to cause such a major breakdown. Too many shows nowadays only gloss over the surface giving us either characters that are quirky just for the sake of being quirky or give us complex characters that are so dark and unlikable that I really don't care what happens...

Bring back Common Law
I was also disappointed to see the show cancelled. I think it could have been great. You laughed when needed and serious when called for. Shame on you USA for giving up. I wondered what would have happened if you would have given up on both NCIS shows.

Common Law Viewer
This was a very entertaining show. The quirky personality differences between the two main charactors is what made the program interesting. The group sessions is what allowed the viewers to get to better appreciate the amusing trials it took for the two of them to be able to work together as a team. It was like a male version of Rizzoli & Isles. Another cop program sure......but there was enough emphasis on their personalities rather than on the darker side of the crime itself to make it a joy to watch the program. I was really disappointed when Common Law was dropped. This was one program I looked forward to watching.

Sekirei: Complete Series (Blu-ray/DVD Combo)

Two seasons of lovliness - WHEN IS SEASON THREE COMING!!!!!!!
At last the first two seasons of the most enjoyable beauty bashing series is in one full collection. Minato is the most luckless man in the world, until the most lovely girl comes crashing out of the sky. She is cute, she is busty, and she can break stone walls with a single punch. Musibi is a fist type sekerei and she has taken the normal man and made him her master. But Minato can not rest on being happy with one lovely young lady - five others also choose him to turn on their special powers and together prepare to fight to the end of the Sekirei project and the one wish that the Sekirei and master get to have when they win.

This is the first two seasons, and despite the high Ecchi level has a great story, a lot of action and humor, and a few heart wrenching moments. I already have seen both season three times and it never get old. Now with the end of season two, there has to be a season three as we need to know who will finally win the whole thing. Watch it for...

Should have known there would be a two pack.
I bought both seasons separately. I could have saved some money if i waited. If you have Netflix, watch the first season. If you are not hooked by the end, then skip this show, but i was hooked. I have not even watched the second season yet. I plan on it, though.

Good series, hoping for another season.
Lots of fun, Some nudity, a lot of panty shots, but a good story to carry it. Left open-ended so it could be continued.

Hayride

I WANT TO BE YOUR SLEDGEHAMMER
This pleasant low budget horror film takes place in LA (Lower Alabama). It has a main plot and a minor subplot. Steven (Jeremy Ivy) brings his girlfriend Amanda (Sherri Eakin) home with him around Halloween. We get to hear and see some of the local flavor as the film builds their character, lines like, "You're not from around here" and "roads that go no where." And of course every proud small town in the south has "the best BBQ in the state." They plan to take Capt. Morgan's Haunted Hayride, a local tradition which features "pitchfork man" based on a local story. Here in Barnwell, we have "rakeman." He doesn't kill people, he just rakes leaves, sort of like Sling-blade, but creepier.

Meanwhile a killer has escaped who might pass for Toj Johnson's son. In the opening scene the killer walks slow dragging an ax. He is able to catch up to a young panicking female at a flat out run...okay she stopped to rest for a second. A pair of odd couple cops are looking for him. Their...

Surprisingly Well-made...
I'm usually not a big fan of horror/slasher movies but this one was surprisingly enjoyable and well-made. I saw a showing of "Hayride" at an actual corn maze in Summerdale, Alabama.
The atmosphere may have added to the spookiness of the film because there were a few moments (I'm not embarrassed to say) I almost jumped out of my seat. The acting was alot better than I expected, especially for a lower budget horror movie. And a pretty awesome twist at the end.
Besides a few moments where the audio is a little bad, it was pretty professionally made. Overall I really enjoyed Hayride! 4 Stars

Local Writer/Director does well with this Movie
As a Movie Lover I'm not a Slasher/Horror Movie Fan. This Movie was good and not to much Blood. Some gory parts but much less than I expected. Had a easy story to follow. Cool it was shot in my hometown of Fairhope, Alabama. For a low budget movie, the Director/Producer Terron R. Parsons (I know his Mom) did a good job. I'd watch it again. I gave it a 5 Star rating because of the talent effort on Terron's behalf, the familiar background areas, the interesting storyline and it kept me glued to my seat. Heard Hayride 2 was now being made, must be because of the twist at the end of Hayride. Watch it for yourself and see what you think. -Signed Movielover supports this local made Film.

Thomas & Friends: Steamies Vs. Diesels

good dvd
this is a great dvd this video has 4 stories

thomas to the rescue:Thomas wonders if sir thompham hatt will scrap steamies after diesel calls thomas a stinky old steam engine but when the diesels get contaminated feul its up to thomas to get fresh fuel

henry and the wishing tree:henry wants to pull passengers instead of logs when henry comes upon a wishing tree he makes a wish but he soon fells unhappy will his second wish come true?

squeak, rattle and roll:gordan starts making loud noises gordan thinks sir thompham hatt will scrap him when he finds out about the noises when sir thompham hatt finds out he sends gordan to the repair yard!

percys new whistle: arry, and bert tease percy about his whistle
percy later surprises arry and bert with his whistle being very loud.he keeps using his super loud whistle ,but i causes trouble by damaging thomas frieght cars almost caused bertie to have an accident and create a giant snowball that crashs on percy. but he uses his whistle...

It's okay
Wow!, HIT! Entertainment has changed Thomas alot, but the changes they made aren't all that bad. For example, the new theme song at first sounded pretty dumb but it soon grew on me. The only bad thing HIT! added were those ridiculous activites. I think even little kids will get bored of these silly things, they offer no form of actual learning fun and you can get envolved with them that much. Besides those activites, the stories were okay:

1)THOMAS TO THE RESCUE 4/5:

Sir Topham Hatt sends Thomas to help Mavis at the quarry. Thomas is surprised to see Diesel there. Diesel says that Sir Topham Hatt will soon scrap steamies and Thomas begins to worry. But will Thomas help all the diesels when they start breaking down due to bad fuel?

2)HENRY AND THE WISHING TREE 4.5/5:

Henry wishes that he could pull the Express sometime instead of Gordon. The next day, Henry's wish has come true but Gordon ends up in the repair yard and Henry is afraid that it...

For Toddlers its great
If you are a parent looking for a Thomas tape this a good one. Alot of people complained about the music changing or the stories or the new look. Well my 2.5 year old loves this one. He likes the part where they expplain the different sounds that trains make and he likes the games in the middle instead of the regular intermissions and he likes the song at the end. Reading the other reviews it either seems like they were written by adults whom for whatever reason still watch these tapes without children or older children whom the stories might bore them but for a young Thomas fan this is a great DVD.

Mister Skinnylegs/Grandpa Pig's Boat

Fun to watch though I don't think its one of those education kind
We at home enjoy watching Peppa Pig in its Brit English accent. It's easy to understand, funny, and cute. Now the reason I say cute because my son enjoys watching too, I don't want him to think it's geared towards the female population because of the name of the cartoon Peppa Pig.
There are some episodes that have a bit of learning facts, but don't expect Sesame Street experience. This cartoon is just to enjoy what a true hand drawn cartoon is like and enjoy an episode or two with your young ones on a cozy couch :-)
There is a narrator for every episode, but it's speradiacally through each one.

Great show
I love the way the family interacts and the fact that frequently the show ends with the whole family lying on their back and laughing.

kids love it
The kids really took to this show. Would highly recommend for younger kids. Simple and cute and easy to follow.

My 2 1/2 year old will watch this over and over. He sings the songs and talks about the firemen. Most importantly, it teaches him to be cautious of doing things that could cause a fire, like playing with matches.
The DVD will auto play, there is no advertising in the beginning so I don't have to stand for 5 minutes before I can start it, like the Sesame Street ones.
This is nearly an hour long, not 30 minutes like most. For me that's great because I don't have to start it over before he falls asleep. Well worth the price.

Great Gatsby: Midnight in Manhattan

Interesting BBC documentary from 2000 gets tie-in release with 2013 3-D Baz Lurman film
I knew this might not be a new documentary when the opening scenes showing the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City skyline still showed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. It's not till late in the 41-minute film that you realize that it was made in 2000, before the 9/11 tragedy. This really has not much effect on enjoying the program (produced by the BBC) except when - again late in the program - there is discussion of the financial "bubble" and when it is (actually "was") going to burst.

Being released to catch the interest in F. Scott Fitzgerald and his "Great American Novel" with the release this month of Baz Lurman's 3-D "Musical" version, the program provides observations on the author from such fellow authors (then living in 2000) as George Plympton, William Styron, Norman Mailer, Hunter S. Thompson and Garrison Keillor. We also hear from Fitzgerald's former secretary - who was there when he died in 1939 at age 44. Fitzgerald's granddaughter narrates the...

SPECIAL FEATURE
The title attraction on this DVD is quite disappointing. It is 49 minutes of a variety of literary, luminary talking heads who say, in fact, very little about Fitgerald, his life, his wife, his writing and most particularly the ostensible subject of this documentary, THE GREAT GATSBY. The 75th Anniversary of the publication of this
greatest of 20th century novels surely deserved a much more in-depth and inspired approach than is to be found herein.

The decided delight of this disc is to be found in the little known extra. PRIVATE AFFAIRS: A DREAM OF LIVING is a BBC production from 1975. Late, great David Hemmings plays F. Scott Fitzgerald wonderfully - and looks very much like the writer as well. The drama covers one day and night in the life of Scott and Zelda along with Hemingway and assorted cronies. It is worth the price of purchase and more than makes up for the disappointing main fare.

I had been waiting for this dvd to be released
and it was well worth the wait. Fascinating man, fascinating story. Excellent production. If you are at all interested in Mr. Fitzgerald and his work, you will be pleased with this dvd.

Lego Batman: The Movie - DC Super heroes Unite

An (almost) Feature Length Lego Movie (With Batman!)
My family has enjoyed the previous Lego movie releases for Star Wars, but considering the superhero obsession in our household I had to pick this film up. The movie itself runs 71 minutes, almost a feature length which is quite a bit more than we've gotten with the previous Star Wars specials. The movie begins with Batman and Superman taking on Lex Luthor and flashes back to the "Man of the Year" award ceremony which quickly gets out of control when the Joker leads a group of villains (including the Penquin, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Two-Face and Catwoman) to crash the party. And what better way to stop a villain team up then by getting together a few "super" friends like Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Cyborg and The Flash. There are plenty of other characters that show up along the way as well.

While this film utilizes the spirit of the cut-scenes from LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, it is not...

Never Played the Video Game
My 6 and 7-yr-old were thoroughly entertained, and it was mildly enjoyable for dad to watch too. Whether this was pieced together with video game cut scenes or not, I didn't notice. The computer animation is high quality and voice acting excellent.

Great fun for the kids
If you have played the Lego Batman 2 game, the plot of this movie will be very familiar to you. In fact, its almost as if Traveler's Tales figured they could throw a game together on the cheap by re-using the cut scenes from the video game. Although its not a complete clone of the game, some scenes are re-edited and re-cut so they aren't exact, but they are close enough.

If you are over the age of 12, then there isn't a ton of stuff in this movie to interest you. There are some references to past Batman movie and TV incarnations and the recreation of the 1989 Tim Burton Batman movie opening from LEGO bricks is a classic. My kids watch the scene and yell out "The bat-symbol!" every time they watch it. There is also a scene where Superman hears the Richard Donner Superman film's theme and says "That music sounds familiar." To which Batman replies "I don't listen to music." I just about fell over when I found out that my kids don't instantly equate that tune with...

Fringe: The Complete Series

Best tv show in recent memory
I hate most tv shows and it's very rare that I come across one that even catches my interest, not only does Fringe catch my interest I LOVE IT!! J.J Abrams has impressed me yet again!

I wish Fringe lasted longer than 5 seasons though, Fringe caught my eye on Netflix and I've been religiously watching it every day.

Raise your suspension for disbelief and enjoy!
If everything needs to be perfect to the detail, this series is not for you. If you can set a few qualms aside and just go with the flow, you're going to love the ride that Fringe takes you on. Fringe is a completely character driven story. You will learn to love the characters and the relationships they create and eventually re-create with eachother. There are a lot of things that I'm still confused about from the show which is why I'm looking forward to watching it through again. The first 3 seasons get five stars. Everyone always thought the show would be cancelled, but it kept coming back (even to the creators surprise)which may have thrown the story through some unexpected loops resulting in the last 2 seasons not being as good, but still enjoyable... to me anyway.

I wish I'd Known Sooner
I didn't get into this show until after the final season. I wish I'd known sooner how good it was. Not all of my questions were answered, but it's shocking, funny, and overall entertaining. Fringe is not only possibly the best sci-fi show I've seen, it's also a great drama.

The Oranges [Blu-ray]

Surprisingly pleasant family drama/comedy
"The Oranges" (2012 release; 90 min.) brings the story of two married couples living across the street from each other. There is Terry and Cathy Ostroff (played by Oliver Platt and Allison Janney). Terry and Cathy are best friends with David and Paige Walling (played by Hugh Laurie and Catherine Keener), whose marriage is not going well and whose twenty-something yr. old daughter Vanessa still lives with them. This is in sharp contrast with Terry and Cathy's daughter (and Vanessa's childhood friend) Nina (played by Leighton Meester), who is living "la vida loca" in San Francisco. Things go unexpectedly sour for Nina who, tails between her legs, moves in with her parents. The two families are enjoying their time together, until Nina and David develop a crush on each other (despite their significant age difference). At that point we are about one-third into the movie, and to tell you more of the plot would simply ruin your viewing experience. But as you can well imagine, all kinds of...

Definitely Worth a Look
While this wasn't the greatest movie ever made, it definitely was solid. With a lot of movies I watch, I find myself stopping and starting the DVD every once in awhile as I get distracted by something else. So, for me to watch a movie from start to finish without interruptions is a rarity. This was one of those movies.
The plot is solid and believable, the dialogue is solid and believable, the characters are (for the most part) solid and believable, and the acting is strong from start to finish. Again, definitely "worth a look."
No real weaknesses anywhere, which sounds like "faint praise," but really isn't, because so many movies these days have glaring weaknesses. So it really is nice to watch a movie that doesn't have any weak spots - makes it very enjoyable and satisfying to watch.

IT'S NOT ABOUT BEING HAPPY
This is another feel good, feel awkward, sometimes humorous indie. The beginning of the film establishes the characters of the six main players. Two families are best friends. They do everything together, but not all is well. David Walling (Hugh Laurie) has been sleeping on the couch. His daughter Vanessa (Alia Shawkat) does some first person narration. Growing up she was best friends with Nina (Leighton Meester) who is part of the second family. Unlike Vanessa, Nina is a free spirit and Vanessa sees her as the antagonist.

Nina breaks up with her boyfriend and comes home for Thanksgiving after two years. The parents hope to fix her up with Toby Walling (Adam Brody), but Nina has suddenly developed a taste for older men, older married men who sleep on the couch. They are quickly discovered and the film goes into a mild disaster mode with crude comments from Nina's mom (Allison Janney) and snarky remarks from the hurt Vanessa.

The film had some funny parts, but for...

Superman: Unbound [HD]

Great story, lots of character depth
This review is not on the blu-ray, but on the movie itself. I was lucky enough to see a screening of this at WonderCon along with a panel discussion with some cast and creators.

I wouldn't consider myself a diehard Superman fan, but as a fan of comics and pop culture in general, I really enjoyed this movie. Not much (if any) background is needed to enjoy it. Superman and his cousin Kara (Supergirl) are attacked by a android that turns out to be a scout searching for worlds to collect as specimens. Kara recalls how before she escaped Krypton, a villain known only as Brainiac sent similar androids to attack her hometown and literally "stole" it off the face of the planet. Now that these androids have appeared again, they fear that Metropolis may be Brainiac's next victim. Determined to prevent the past from repeating itself, Superman plans to find Brainiac and stop him before he is able to steal any more worlds.

What follows afterward is an interesting look...

This works for me.
I have never been a Superman fan. I mean, how can you stop or stump a man who can only be halted by a piece of Kyptonite or an occasional red sun appearance? Still, I liked this movie a lot! His battle with Brainiac and the subtle adult actions proven to me that DC is moving closer to the adult level while maintaining it's core fan audience. The explanation of his and Supergirl aging differently...I will admit, my brother had to explain that one to me. I caught on and continued watching. The battle was awesome and I really enjoyed it. I'll definitely watch out for any more releases by DC, because they seem to be moving up in the world, and I'm totally enjoying the ride!

Superman review.
Excellent made action animated movie!! You will not be disappointed. A lot of action and fist fighting from the Man of Steel!

The Condemned (English Subtitled)

This Chiller From Puerto Rico Has Creepiness To Spare, But Doesn't Hold Many Surprises
The new ghost story from director Roberto Busó-García, "The Condemned," creates an extremely eerie mood and holds on to this creepy vibe quite effectively. It has an understated stylishness that really made me want to like the movie more than I did. Ultimately, though, a movie of this sort needs a little mystery. The horrors of "The Condemned" are always very easy to intuit. As the lead character strives to understand the past that is haunting her, there is nothing that we (as the audience) haven't been able to figure out from the introductory scenes. I wanted the awful truth to be just as shocking to us as it is to the movie's heroine! Without this escalating sense of dread, the movie never really goes anywhere. Yes, there is a twist in the climactic moments, but it didn't have the impact that I think was intended. It's like Busó-García was relying on this one moment to elevate the entire film and it doesn't quite accomplish this goal.

The movie...

Suspenseful, Thought-Provoking Ghost Story from Puerto Rico
This suspenseful, eerie and elegant film from Puerto Rico isn't easy to describe but it's well worth the watch. It's scary but not strictly horror, it's profound but not strictly art-house, it's a Puerto Rican film that is only about Puerto Rico in a metaphorical way. This is not your typical haunted house film, the horror isn't obvious to the casual viewer. In a fascinating way, "The Condemned" methodically proves to be a meditation on the curse of people who forgo their individual responsibilities and blame others as a shield.

Interestingly, the film immediately disposes with the traditional "mystery" in genre films: from the beginning we know that there is a dying, celebrated doctor who did terrible things in the past. Some may be turned off by this bold decision: I found it to be the key to the wonders of the film. This isn't a story about what happened, but about the terrible world that was created by the decisions (or lack of decisions) of those involved in or...

Have Gun Will Travel: The Sixth and Final Season, Vol. 2

Think you've been shorted two episodes? Read This:
If you log onto Internet Movie Database, you'll see Season 6 contained "34" episodes, but only 32 are appear in this two volume season set. Huh?

Here's the breakdown: "Sanctuary" originally aired December 31, 1960. So it's included in Season 4, Volume 1. "Squatter's Rights" originally aired December 30, 1961, and is included in Season 5, Volume 1.
Under Season 6, Internet Movie Database lists "Sanctuary" as having aired on June 22, 1963, and "Squatter's Rights" as having aired on August 3rd of '63; several months after the final new episode of the series aired. Therefore, IMDB lists season 6 as having 34 episodes, not the 32 included in Vol. 2 DVD set.

Since the two episodes in question were summer repeats, there was no need to place them on the season 6 set. Hope this clears up the confusion.

4 stars are for weak scripts and Paramount's continued greediness in its multi-volume pricing of TV show season sets.

Picture and sound is great!
HGWT is another of my favorites from my childhood. I used to watch it on Saturday night, along with Gunsmoke, with my mom and dad.

The picture is top-notch and the sound is very good. Some of the episodes are a cut belong the earlier years as I've read the Richard Boone was getting tired of the show. I'm so GLAD that the movie version with Eminem that was to update the story to a bounty hunter in modern day Detroit was finally dropped - that would have been a disaster of the first order!!

But anyway, even thro the series had dropped off a little it is still very fun to watch today.

Finally!!!!!!!!!!
Love the series, love Richard Boone - glad the dvd's are finally coming out for the final season - seems like forever !!

Wish it was just one set, but I will take what I can get!

Cars 3

Great movie
Hey this was the best movie I've ever seen! All of the bonus features were amazing as well. I love all of the decision makers videos they are gonna be famous soon. Thanks Troma for putting this out.

No.
I am Troma's biggest fan. But I am not YouTube's biggest fan. I didn't know what Cars was when I bought this, but it looked...entertaining. It's only about 40 minutes long, thankfully, because this video is annoying, and to me, it wasn't very funny. It was like a Tim and Eric skit, only...this guy doesn't have the talent that Tim and Eric have, and can't pull it off. Now, I have seen worse, and I am sure there are people who will enjoy it, it just wasn't for me.

Perhaps the greatest movie ever made by men and/or any other mammal
This movie was like Philadelphia and Lethal Weapon teamed up to fight The Passion of the Christ inside a helicopter made of Freejack DVDs. People should buy it and show it at weddings.

Kipper: Water Play

Something's missing
I didn't buy this at first because I was of the impression that it was a compilation of water episodes from the other DVDs. We own most, if not all, of the other DVDs and I can't say that I've seen any of the episodes before. They may have been shown on TV, or may have been on the earlier VHS tapes, but nevertheless they were all new to me.

This one is very short at five episodes, not the length of the usual Kipper value packs, and the biggest problem is that Pig and Arnold are missing. Gotta have those pigs!

The five episodes are imaginative as usual, including a talking magic frog and an elephant, plus Kipper does a great Gene Kelly/Mary Poppins impression on an umbrella adventure.

Not the best Kipper to start with, but reasonable entertainment for seasoned veterans.

Amanda Richards January 30, 2005

Very Disappointing!
Our family has all of the Kipper videos and we have always loved them. We were excited to see a new edition but were very disappointed upon reciept when we realized that all but 1 of the stories on this DVD was on previous DVD's. If they are going to do a compilation DVD it should be advertised as such. We felt very cheated since for the money we paid we only got one new episode.

Good, clean fun
I have to say that I enjoy all the Kipper videos and this one is no exception. I have a 3 year old daughter who delights in watching Kipper and Tiger's antics in this particular DVD.

One great thing about Kipper videos is that they aren't full of violence and instead are low-key and show Kipper working out problems or learning new things. That is a rare find in the selection of "children's" videos.

Trouble In The Heights

I'M NOT DIRTY HARRY
Diego (Rayniel Rufino) is an honest struggling Latino, working as a cook at an upscale restaurant. He wakes up one day and finds his whole world coming to an end. His girlfriend Ana (Alexandra Metz) is pregnant. His 8 year old brother Javy (Antonio Ortiz) is wanted by the mob in a bad sort of way. It seems Javy and his friend Robbie (Cruz Santiago) decided to score some fireworks, but ended up stealing cash, and a lot of it. They also caused other problems that can not be fixed. Diego must now try to figure out what to do, because they never call the cops in these stories.

This is a story that holds your interest in spite of what seems to a be a slow pace. You want to see Diego succeed. The acting was done so well in this indie, you keep watching. Worth a view if you like the urban crime dramas that is bigger on drama than action.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, N-word. No sex or nudity.

Nice!
Watching Trouble in the Heights felt like seeing Washington Heights from a hole other perspective with out loosing the very essence of this neighborhood. It was good to see the streets I grew up in a way, that I have yet to see. I like that the cast and crew are Latinos in the Arts. Overall, I enjoyed watching.

Refreshing and honest little film
This is an old-fashioned film set entirely on location in NYC's Washington Heights, which has been home to a Dominican population since the 1980s. Pitting ordinary working-class folk against nefarious drug lords and gangs, Trouble in the Heights's charm is rooted in character rather than in its fairly outlandish story line. Talented unknown actors bring this urban tale of good vs evil to life -- the acting is terrific -- and I really did care about our very likeable neighborhood heroes. Unlike most current movies, Trouble is refreshingly slow-paced: shots last more than 10 seconds; conversations are real-time, not shorthand. So the plot's suspense feels plot-driven rather than manipulated by lightning-fast cuts. Try this little indie -- you won't be sorry.

Female Teacher Hunting

Smart Talk on Skin: The Gloriously Depraved But Decidedly Unconventional FEMALE TEACHER HUNTING
There's much more afoot here than what get more commonly delivered in the average Pinky/Pinku film (which this is and is not). With an almost macabre `After-School Special' quality, FEMALE TEACHER HUNTING tries to be about more than the act of sex and/or the glorification of rape (a staple of many similar Japanese films, especially those under the `Female Teacher' label). One of the characters remarks, by their nature, "guppies make the best of bad situations," and that's not a sentiment normally explored when the pursuit of skin is paramount. Likewise, HUNTING frankly tries to say something about human nature - not just commenting separately on the roles for the male and female of the species - and it comes in the delivery of a smart script that tries to give some psychological underpinnings to the actions of its various players.

At this point, let me add the noble aside of "Yes, yes, if you're only here for the simulated sex, there's plenty for you to!"...

Overly censored
Ok, this was shot half decently, and the video quality is nothing to complain about, but the censorship sure is. If there's even a hint of something being seen, aside from the women's breasts or butt cheeks, a huge blur pops up, covering a full quarter of the screen. There's one scene looking down at a couple, and apparently a few pixels of hair were visible, and the the shot ended up with a huge feathered black blur over the entire center of the frame, almost completely obscuring the actors.

I won't be wasting money on this series again.

Female teacher Hunting
I did not like this movie much. I thought the storyline was lame, and not very provocative. Female teacher in front of students was way better. I would not recommend this movie

Hatchet II

What A Hack Job!
I must say I really enjoyed Hatchet 2. Though originality is zip, I still found it somewhat refreshing. Essentially it's a rehash of the first film with the body count and the gore upped a notch. The survivor of the first film's massacre, Marybeth(here played by Danielle Harris) decides to go back to the swamp and take care of killer Victor Crowley once and for all. She gets Reverend Zombie(Tony Todd) to accompany her, and he rounds up a bunch of locals to go on the hunt. Of course Reverend Zombie has his own selfish reasons for going along on this shindig. And of course another massacre ensues.
I'm not gonna say that you'll like this film if you liked the first one, coz it seems as though many folks who liked the first one hated this one.
I though it was a lot of fun. In recent years there has been a tidal wave of horror films that claim to be in the style of 70/80 horror grindhouse cinema. I found most of these films to be failures through their use of CGI gore and...

Adam Green raises the gorescore in Hatchet 2...but his plotting still needs work
Adam Green's slasher Hatchet (Unrated Director's Cut) (2006), ended unexpectedly with the character Marybeth, played by Tamara Feldman, being tossed into the swamp by crazed killer Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder). Hatchet 2 (2010) picks up right where Hatchet ended, with Marybeth hitting the water, however the transition isn't exactly smooth, as Danielle Harris replaces Feldman, who does not reprise her role as Marybeth. The version of the film on DVD is "uncut and unrated", supposedly identical to that which played in theaters.

As in the first film, the best thing about Hatchet 2 are the kills, which are prodigious, extremely gory, and intended to go beyond what has been done before. The carnage is so excessive and over the top, that you become numb to the violence, as the film loses any ties to reality, becoming more of a bizarre spectacle, rather than a really horror thriller.

Marybeth...

GREAT SEQUEL
MAY CONTAIN MINOR PLOT SPOILERS. The movie opens with Marybeth escaping from the monster Victor Crowley. She is helped by one-eye Jack. Later Jack discovers Marybeth is a Dunstan and orders her out and to go talk to Rev. Zombie. Victor shows up at Jack's shack, rips out his intestine then uses it as a cord to pop off his head. The killing and gore in this movie can best be described as "Troma" style. Every death scene hits a major squirting artery. This beginning scene also has the bulk of the movie's nudity as Jack views a found video camera.

Marybeth, who is perhaps the worst at acting in this film, visits Rev. Zombie (Tony Todd) who explains how Victor Crowley became a ghost/legend/killer with a remarkable story telling voice aka the James Earl Jones of horror movies. As it turns out, Zombie's boat was lost in Honey Island Swamp. He forms a posse (including one hot blond for one last nude/sex scene) to retrieve his boat and to kill Victor Crowley once and for all...
