Chinatown [Blu-ray Steelbook]

Updated for Blu-ray: Much improved picture and extras for new edition of classic film
A remarkable film noir classic, "Chinatown" finally gets the deluxe treatment it deserves on Blu-ray.

Blu-Ray: The Blu-ray looks quite nice. There is grain evident throughout but it isn't obstrusive staying true to the "look" of the original film and films of the time. Detail is quite nice throughout with my only complaint a bit heavy handed DNR on occasion in some scenes but that, again, could be justified if the grain was wildy inconsistent from shot to shot. The transfer walks the fine line of providing us with a sharp looking transfer that doesn't fall into the DNR pit of plastic skin and textures so smooth they rob the film of detail.

It appears that the print used for the previous DVD (and quite possibly the same transfer although I haven't been able to confirm this)was also the source for this edition of the film on Blu-ray. It's also possible this is an older HD transfer (again, I haven't been able to confirm when it was done) which might explain the look...

A milestone in film noir history.
"Water is the life blood of every community." With this statement, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's website begins its biography of William Mulholland, the real life model of two of this movie's characters, water department chief Hollis Mulwray (an obvious play on words) and water tycoon Noah Cross. And indeed water, the access to it and the wealth it provides, is what drives everything and everybody in this movie set in the ever-thirsty Los Angeles of the first decades of this century, a budding boom town on the brink of victory or decay ... and whether it will be one or th other depends on the city's ongoing access to drinking water.

"Chinatown"'s story is based on William Mulholland's greatest coup; the construction of the Owen Valley aqueduct which provided Los Angeles with a steady source of drinking water but also entailed a lot of controversy. Splitting Mulholland's complex real-life persona into two fictional characters (the noble Mulwray who...

You Can't Ever Forget "Chinatown"
About an hour into "Chinatown", Noah Cross (John Huston) says to Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson), "You may think you know what you're dealing with, but believe me, you don't." Gittes, whose heard this rap before, just smiles. "Why is that funny?" asks Cross. "It's what the D.A. used to tell me about Chinatown." If any exchange defines "Chinatown" the movie then this is it. It's a film where the cliched metaphor of the onion is quite apt: the more layers you peel away, the more layers you find. And the less you're likely to understand. It begins life as a simple detective story, but eventually spins out of control into a web of intrigue (another cliched metaphor) that not only includes the murder of water commissioner Hollis Mulwray, but the entirety of 1930's Los Angeles.

Into this web is sprung Jake Gittes, a man who seems to be a typical film noir detective, but upon closer inspection is much more. Or, as we shall see, much less. I'd argue that Jake is an existential...

Wages Of Sin

Takes you somewhere you never would have Imagined
I started watching The Wages Of Sin because I wanted to watch something that wasn't big budget and I had basically exhausted my other choices,I never thought it would capture my attention so fast and keep me glued to the screen as it did.
The players which included only 3 actors were all good but the stand out by far was Lauren Martin who portrayed the character of Celee. The film is about a kidnapping that unravels so many secrets and a couple of OMG moments plus it takes us to places that I would never have imagined us going in this little kidnapping for ransom film.
It is not action packed and there is no gore although there is blood so if you are looking for a slasher flick look elsewhere but if you like smart dialogue and a cat and mouse of wits so to speak I most highly recommend this film.

Wages of Sin - a magnet of a movie.
A short way into the movie, while trying to figure out where the plot was going, I got hooked on the characters and felt compelled to see where they would take me. The surprise ending was out of nowhere but yet believable. The acting, writing and directing were allWages Of Sin quite good and paid off in the end. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful yarn.

Shocking Thriller
This little film was a great thriller with a shocking ending! The acting was great, and the film was shot very well. I highly recommend it!

Kipper: Imagine That

Strange surprise
Kipper has been a great love at our house since my 3 year old son was 18 months. The "Kipper- Imagine That" video does have one strange and rather freaky story in it- it starts with the characters finding a secret door that leads them off into darkness. Eventually, they end up a desert-like land where a scary dragon pops out of a crater at them! It scared the daylights out of my son, who insists on fastforwarding through that entire episode. The other stories are your typical gentle Kipper and friends.

You'll love these stories as much as your child will
My 22 month old son and I LOVE Kipper. The shorts included in this video showcase Kipper and his friends in all sorts of situations where they rely on their imaginations to have fun. It's also longer than most kids' videos--a full hour--and if you can wade through the seemingly endless promos for other videos at the beginning of the tape, you'll fall in love with Kipper, just like we did.

Another great Kipper video
All my kids (ages 7, 5 & 2 1/2) just love watching the Kipper videos and especially this one. There are so many imaginative adventures in this one...the dragon scene -- I guess it depends on the kids. My kids can't wait for the dragon to pop out, and they want to rewind over that part many times in a row to watch it again. There's really nothing to dislike, in general, about the Kipper videos, and this one does not disappoint.

Starlet [Blu-ray]

One of my favorite movies of the year
I'm so happy it's already out on Bluray and DVD! Starlet was one of my favorite movies of the year. Absolutely in my top three. It completely caught me by surprise. I really don't want to spoil too much because the beauty of this film is to discover it on your own. Nonetheless, I think I can say that the performances are outstanding. There is such a natural way in which the actors exist in the film. It all feels so natural. Dree Hemingway's work is truly impressive and inspiring. The film carefully takes you in. There is a new revelation in every scene, subtle or big, the film never stops surprising. The film is harsh, sweet, naive, mature, it just is what is has to be when it has to be. I love that. A beautiful thing is that this film never ever judges any of its characters and truly makes you think that nothing is what it seems. Starlet is pure honesty. I feel that the director and people involved made this one from the heart. There is nothing better than an honest piece of work...

a film to relate with.
There's a feeling in the movie that makes the spectator relate with; an every day life loneliness, a void that we try to run away from but in the end its always there... and in between that, what seems to save us: finding am accomplice for that feeling. sharing it without even mentioning it.
The story is minimalistic. Silences are beautifuly placed and tell the audience more than what would dialogue do. Or at least, it gives the audience the space to relate with the movie, and fill the blanks with those feelings.
The music and photography are there to back up the mood of the film amazingly. I fully recommend it.

Few films achieve this kind of grace
STARLET is a sun-bleached Valentine to L.A. exploring the buoyancy of lies. Pleasingly unaffected and promising in style. Lead perfs are lovely. There's a bit of the Greta Gerwig in STARLET's star, Dree Hemingway. I mean that as a big compliment. One of those rare American films that is so thoughtfully observed and sensitively captured, it gives me hope for the indie landscape.

Gunsmoke: The Eighth Season, Vol. 2

best show ever was!
matt, kitty, chester, doc, they all seem like members of the family! love to watch them, almost every evening after supper

Good stuff
All the actors have matured and grown into their roles and made them their own! Just great stuff, easy viewing!

Wild west stories
Stories about people who think they are above common sense, and how the gun and whiskey ruled the lives of many dishonest people. Death ruled when a mans honor was called, unlike today when there is no honor in a lot of men.

Not all the smut you find in movies and shows we have now adays.

Thomas & Friends: Thomas' Sodor Celebration!

So far the best Thomas DVD due to great extra features
What sets this Thomas DVD apart is the excellent bonus features that are well done and my child actually enjoys doing. In addition to the hour ro so of episodes you get "storybook adventure" which is a story done in computer animation with problems to solve between every scene. the problems are radomized a bit so you kid can nto just memorize everything. also included in the special features is a read along story (thomas birthday party) where the words light up when being read. at the end there is an option quiz. there is also a gallery with the major characters pictures and bios amoung a few other things.

i wish all the kid dvds had such quality interactive features. heck i would get the dvd just for the above mentioned special features.

Best season 8 compilation so far
This Thomas video was too bad. The stories are good and season 8 has grown on me. There is the usual seven stories on here and three activites and a music video. It's funny have the story on here entitled Fish has the exact same name as the story from season 4 called Fish. The stories on this dvd are:

THOMAS SAVES THE DAY 8/10:

Thomas isn't very good at turning the sharp bend around the mountain so he has Annie and Clarabel guide him. But on day, he doesn't have his two coaches with him and ends up crashing on the sharp turn. The next day, Thomas must stop some runaway trucks but can he make it pass the mountain bend?

DON'T TELL THOMAS 8/10:

There is a surprise that everyone on the island is planning for Thomas and Thomas gets suspicious when he hears the other engines talking about it. He soon gets mad when nobody will tell him about the surprise. At last the surprise is ready but Thomas is nowhere to be seen.

FISH 7/10:...

Buyers Beware
I ordered this item for my nephew because it was a limited edition and the pictures of the item showed that it came with a gold Thomas toy train.
When I received my order the item said limited edition but had a blue Thomas instead of the gold one. I had them call me due to the wrong item, and the young lady said she would send a replacement order. I received the second one and it was the same thing, another blue Thomas toy. I called back and the guy told me they had removed the picture and he would refund my money. That still leaves me without what I ordered. The rating is for the seller, not the product.

So to make a long story short,

DO NOT ORDER THIS IF YOU ARE WANTING THE LIMITED EDITION GOLD THOMAS

because if you are like me, it will be blue.

The Unnatural

Premium Price and you get COMMERCIALS
~
This review is about "Bob's Burgers" season 3 and "Archer" season 4. Earlier seasons do not contain ads. If not paying for commercials is important to you too, I would suggest checking ALL of FOX'S titles before purchasing. If the episode description states that the length of an episode is longer than 22 mins. then you are paying premium prices for tainted material. Example; "Family Guy","American Dad","The Cleavland Show" and even "The Simpsons" current seasons shows a running time of 24 mins. per episode. That means you're paying $1.99 to $2.99 for an episode that is almost 10% ADVERTISING!!! Even if that only totaled 2 min. per episode, if you download 30 episodes that is a total of at least 1 HOUR of FOX ADS TAKING UP ROOM ON YOUR HARD DRIVE! Don't forget that sometimes you're stuck with almost 4 mins. of ads per episode.

I really like this show. 5 STARS for Bob's Burgers!!!

1 STAR for FOX for tacking on commercials both at the BEGINING AND ENDS of...

COMERCIALS!!! WHAT!??
I Love the show but this gets 1 star because of FOX Ads at beginning and end of a PAID download... I will NEVER BUY from FOX / amazon video if commercials are involved.

I love this show!
This show is amazing and I love it so very much. Why am I giving it a low rating you ask? Because of the pre and post rolls Fox had added to each and every show advertising other shows on the network. I bought this show because I do enjoy it, I want the shows creators to be rewarded for their efforts, and I want more seasons. These ads are a jerk move on the part of Fox and there is no reason for it. If you are watching this show, you're likely in the audience demographic and already know about shows that have been on for a decade already. Yes the ads do not encroach on the actual show but that's besides the point.

Dear Fox, you suck. Take out these ads. You want to know why piracy exists? Look no further than yourselves.
